Bethalto Shipping Experts Highlight Operation Santa

Bethalto, IL — As the air turns chilly and stores start piping holiday music through the speakers, children across the nation are settling down crisscross on the floor with crayons and markers crafting letters to Santa Claus. While adults might not believe that a jolly man in a red suit magically delivers presents to good little girls and boys on Christmas Eve every year, these kids certainly think he exists, and the thousands of letters flooding into the post office each year proves that. So, in order to keep their community informed about a successful USPS holiday program, a FedEx shipping store in Bethalto is sharing the details surrounding “Operation Santa” and how it has helped to provide thousands of low-income families with presents each year.

The program began over a century ago, in 1912. Letters to Santa were pouring in from across the nation, and Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock informed local Postmasters that they could sanction their employees to respond to the letters. That decision launched “Operation Santa,” and the program has been going strong since then. In 2017, the program went digital in New York and has since spread nationwide.

To participate in the program, children write their letters to Santa (templates are available on the USPS Operation Santa website), their parents put them in an envelope with their complete return address listed, and mail them (from November 1 to December 10) to Santa’s workshop at 123 Elf Lane, North Pole, 88888. USPS then sorts and scans the letters to be posted online for generous businesses or people to “adopt.” According to USPS, “Operation Santa is committed to protecting the privacy of all our participants, including children and adopters. Before letters written to Santa are posted online for adopters to view, all personal information and identifying details are redacted to protect of children and their families (like last names, addresses, community, location, and contact information). Additionally, those who adopt letters are kept anonymous — it’s from Santa, after all!”

As a local business, The Mail Box Store is thrilled to see kids from around the country have the opportunity for their holiday wishes to come true. As a full-service packing, shipping, and printing center, they are an authorized shipping outlet for FedEx, USPS, and DHL and offer a wide range of packaging and shipping options to include overnight and international shipping.
